"Being Queer Saved My Life:" Join Our Writing Workshop, June 15, 2PM-5PM @ Couch Club Kapitolyo!
A generative writing workshop to usher in Pride Month 🌈
Hi friends!
Some fun news: I’m facilitating another generative writing workshop in collaboration with Tibok Book Store and Couch Club Kapitolyo this June 15, Saturday, from 2 PM-5 PM!
The workshop
“Being queer saved my life. Often we see queerness as deprivation. But when I look at my life, I saw that queerness demanded an alternative innovation from me. I had to make alternative routes; it made me curious; it made me ask, ‘Is this enough for me?’” — OCEAN VUONG
In honor of Pride Month, we’re holding space to reconsider ways the queer body can be a site of joy, pleasure, and ultimately, resistance. Through guided writing exercises, discussions, and sharing, participants will be able to tap into their personal experiences and redefine new narratives about what it means to be queer.
I’m so happy to be able to host it at one of my favorite third places ever, Couch Club Kapitolyo. (The vibes. Immaculate).
What you’ll get out of it:
The chance to generate new drafts or story ideas using guided prompts
A welcoming space to practice, experiment, and be surrounded by like-minded people
Inspiration from the stories of our guest speaker, Brigitte Bautista (author of Don’t Tell My Mother, and You, Me, U.S.!)
Generative writing? What’s that?
It’s an approach to creating work around certain parameters (such as being asked to respond to prompts or writing in timed sessions) to guide our writing.
There are many ways to do generative writing but ultimately, the goal is to get out that “ugly first draft.” Here, we honor our mess, our instinct, and the awkward fumbling of wrenching ideas and feelings onto the page. This is not the time to be perfectionist or careful!
Writing generatively is a practice of giving ourselves permission: to play, to explore, and to make something imperfect - often in the company of other writers!
Register for the event HERE.
We close sign-ups on June 10!
Hope you can join us. All writing levels welcome!
Sincerely,
Andy
